Comments on Velez-Solic: QMKSUModule6Fall2016

Dr. Velez-Solic presents an engaging way to develop content for online teaching that presents a clear roadmap for students to follow. I especially like the way she began with a design of the course itself, week by week, to establish the overall structure and purpose of the course. Then, by adding modules or weekly checklists, the instructor is able to keep the course content on track within the larger course framework. One thing I did not like was her suggestion to have graded items every week. Not only is this unnecessary, it leads students to the conclusion that the acquisition of knowledge occurs through tiny, relatively uncomplicated bits of unconnected material. Studies of higher education learning have long established the importance of long-term, complex projects. It may be possible to meet her suggestion about weekly graded items by breaking long-term projects such as term papers into segments throughout the semester and then grading these segments as if they were separate assignments. Overall, lots of good ideas presented in an engaging format.
